Towards 6G non-terrestrial networks: an autonomous constellation management engine

The mobile communications industry is nowadays trying to integrate satellite networks into its current and predominant architecture. One challenge is the management and operation of the non-terrestrial network, where traditional operations for satellite planning cannot be applied. This paper presents the motivation to deploy a low earth orbit constellation for 5G/IoT purposes, reviews the literature on mission planning systems and identifies the need of a solution for the IoT scenario with a discontinuous non-terrestrial network. It then describes a management tool proposed as a solution for this unaddressed use case and the results obtained with a modeled real scenario.
